The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) is set to commence a database collation of missing persons due to the insurgency in Nigeria and initiate ways to locate them.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja at a stakeholders’ meeting on victims of insurgency database committee, Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Prof. Bem Angwe, said it was important for the federal government to take urgent steps in ensuring that the lapses in the country’s database system were sorted out so that proper data of missing persons was collated.
He said there had been conflicting reports from different quarters in the bid to get the exact figures of missing people, including those internally displaced due to the destabilising activities of insurgents.
Angwe noted that there were several missing persons the nation was not able to account for because of poor data collection and storage.
On her part, Bukky Shonibare who represented the Coordinator, Bring Back Our Girls (BBOG), Aisha Yesufu, said during the data collection, there was the need to also get the data of foreigners who got missing in Nigeria as every life was important.
The meeting had representatives from the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Office of the Statistician General of the Federation and the Nigerian Red Cross, among others.
