Director General of the institute, Prof. Epiphany Azinge SAN, in his address said the two publications took three years of massive research work involving 33 researchers from the institute.
He observed that the two research projects are critical in justice delivery and jurisprudence in view of the role customary law forms the roots of prevailing cultural values and norms in the society.
Prof Azinge added the purpose of the projects was to explore the traditional justice system in Nigeria, pointing out that the laws of any country take root from traditional customs.
Speaking at the occasion, held at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua centre, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr Mohammed Adoke SAN commended Prof Azinge on the feat, stressing that, “by these two publications, NIALS has demonstrated that it is the apex institution for legal studies in Nigeria.”
He said the two research projects would go a long way in helping legal practitioners, lawmakers and the public in enriching their knowledge of customary law and development of traditional jurisprudence in the country.
Represented by his Senior Special Assistant, Prof Peter Akpeh, the justice minister, who was chief host at the event emphasised that customary courts play a vital role in the administration of justice, as issues that have direct bearing to the values of the society are entertained.
On his part, chairman of the occasion, Speaker of House of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal, described the effort of NIALS in publishing the two research projects as superlative, commendable etc.
