Nigerian Institute of Animal Science in collaboration with the Federal Department of Animal Production and Husbandry Services has produced and documented the Minimum Operating Standards (MOS) for curbing the spread of bird flu in Nigeria.
Speaking at the 7th Annual General Meeting and induction ceremony of the institute at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan recently, the president, Professor Israel Adu, said about 10,000 copies each of the MOS for the feed milling industry and poultry industry were printed and have been widely circulated to stakeholders.
Addressing the newly inducted members, Adu said with the challenge of global warming, burgeoning middle class, land pressure, increased awareness about food safety and a growing population, it is no longer business as usual for the animal scientist.
He said with the amendment of the Animal Science Act, the institute has been given enforcement powers and clearly defined the regulatory role of the institute.
Meanwhile, the President, Animal Science Association of Nigeria (ASAN), Mr. Taiwo Adeoye, has advised Nigerian government to build a large, strong diversified, sustainable and competitive economy that guarantees high standard of living and quality of life for the people through efficient production guaranteed through professionalism to address the problem of hunger in the country.
