To commemorate International Youth Day, the Nigerian Business Coalition Against AIDS (NiBUCAA) proudly launched the pilot phase of its annual campaign, “We Can Be the Generation That Ends HIV,” inspired by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This initiative aims to mobilize young Nigerians to take charge in the fight against HIV/AIDS, highlighting the crucial role youth play in shaping their own narrative.
Supported by Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria and its Joint Venture partners, the campaign kicked off with engaging media discussions at Eko FM in Lagos and Rhythm 93.8 in Abuja. Participants tackled the pressing issue of HIV/AIDS among young people, stressing the urgent need for youth-led action.
The campaign culminated in an awareness walk from the University of Lagos to Onike Iwaya Roundabout, with a parallel event in Abuja, starting at the Federal Medical Centre Jabi, passing through the Baze University Community, and returning to the main gate of Baze University.
Participants carried banners and placards, distributed over 5,000 educational materials, including brochures and condoms, and engaged with local residents to raise awareness about HIV prevention and care.
Chiamaka Happiness Madueke, Communications Officer of NiBUCAA, passionately urged youth involvement, stating, “Young people represent one of the most vulnerable populations regarding HIV due to the rising prevalence of unprotected sex, sharing sharp objects, and a lack of comprehensive information about the virus. There is also a troubling perception that HIV is no longer a significant threat, emphasizing the need for renewed awareness and action from youths, by youths, and for youths.”
In Lagos, organizations such as NEPWHAN, ASWHAN, the HIV Trust Fund of Nigeria (HTFN), and the Anti-AIDS Club of the University of Lagos joined the walk, presenting a united front against HIV and reinforcing the message that collective action is key to addressing this public health challenge.
