Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani, has approved N869.1 million for the procurement of furniture and science equipment for public schools.
The sum N655.12 million was for the provision of furniture, electronics and textbooks for the teachers, while N214.1million was meant for the procurement of science equipment, re-agents, and textbooks in core subjects as well as solar-powered electricity plant to nine schools currently under renovation in the state.
The schools were Government Girls Secondary School Bida, Justice Idris Legbo Science College, Kutigi, Maryam Babangida Girls Science College, Minna, Government Science College, Izom, Government Girls College, Kontagora, Government Secondary School, Rijau, Government Girls College, Tegina, Government Day Secondary School, Baro and Mu’azu Ibrahim Commercial Secondary School, Kontagora.
The benefiting schools, according to the chief press secretary to the Governor, Jibrin Ndache, were in the first phase of the on-going effort to transform the education sector.
In a statement yesterday in Minna, Ndache said more schools across the three senatorial districts of the state would be captured in the second phase of the programme.
“The whole school rehabilitation project would simultaneously encapsulate the free school uniform for the girl-child, which has now been extended to cover up to  senior secondary school level, as well as the free school feeding programme,” he said.
