The Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities Youth Leaders Council (NDENYC) has distanced itself from recent protests in Abuja calling for the resignation of the Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.), Mr. Bashir Ojulari.

In a statement signed by its President General, Terry Obieh, the council said the demonstrations did not represent the position of Niger Delta youths, host communities or industry stakeholders.

NDENYC commended President Bola Tinubu for standing by Ojulari and urged Nigerians to allow him continue with ongoing reforms at the national oil company.

Since assuming office in April 2025, Ojulari has introduced a series of initiatives aimed at boosting transparency, oil production and refining capacity. According to the council, these measures have already raised crude oil output from 1.2 million barrels per day to 1.8 million barrels by August 2025 and restored the publication of NNPC’s monthly financial and operational reports.

The group also noted progress in reviving the Warri and Port Harcourt refineries, as well as efforts to strengthen security around oil pipelines. It described the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Act and restructuring of legacy contracts as key steps toward repositioning NNPC Ltd. for global competitiveness.

NDENYC urged the company to continue upholding transparency, accountability and efficiency, stressing that these values were essential to restoring public trust and safeguarding NNPC as a strategic national asset.
