A gynaecologist and wife of Niger State governor, Dr. Amina Abubakar Sani Bello, has called for child spacing to check the increasing rate of maternal mortality in the state.

 In an address at the opening ceremony of the World Contraception Day (WCD) Ambassadors project at Gyigyi and Sharuwadna communities in Shiroro Local Government Area, Dr. Amina said the maternal mortality rate in the state was high and that all hands must be on deck to check it.

 She said: “One of the devastating problems facing Nigeria is women dying at child birth. One of the causes of this is when a women gives birth without proper spacing; while the entire body system is weak another pregnancy sets in while still breastfeeding,” she noted.

She stressed that enough gap should be given to allow nursing mothers to properly breastfeed their children.

 Also speaking at the event,  Mark Hassan Jagaba, the Chairman of Shiroro Local Government, called on the people to jettison the negative perception about family planning. He also advocated for spousal communication.

 Highlight of the occasion, was the presentation of award of 2016 World Contraception Day Ambassador to Dr. Amina in recognition of her commitment to the health and well-being of girls and women in Nigeria by Pharm. Adebisi Adenipekun.
