Niger monarch freed after 45 days in captivity

Dodo of Wawa, Dr Mahmoud Ahmed Aliyu at his palace after his release by bandits

The Dodo of Wawa, Dr Mahmoud Ahmed Aliyu, has been freed by his abductors after spending 45 days in their captivity.

He was said to have been released at about 7:30pm on Tuesday after the payment of N10m ransom.

The Wazirin Wawa, Alhaji Ja’afar Ibrahim Bio, confirmed the release of the traditional ruler to Daily Trust on the telephone but declined comment on how much was paid to secure his release.

In a video shared with Daily Trust by his family, the traditional ruler was seen in a white turban being welcomed by his family and members of the palace.

A family member who first broke the news of his release to our correspondent prayed fervently for Daily Trust for reporting the plight of their father.

Aliyu was abducted in his palace by heavily armed men around 9pm on September 4.
