Nigeria 2009: Hotels increase rates in Ijebu-Ode

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the increase in the rates is coming barely two weeks to the commencement of the much publicised soccer tournament.A visit by NAN Correspondent to some of the hotels showed that the hikes in service rates were effected to coincide with the independence anniversary on Oct. 1.

In most cases, the increases range between 20 and 50 per cent.

Sources within the hospitality industry in the town told NAN that the sharp increases were sequel to the upgrading of facilities recently carried out in virtually all the hotels designated to host officials and players.

Mr Bayo Abdul, who operates one of the major guest houses on the outskirt of the town, told NAN that although the facility was not one of those designated

for use by FIFA officials, he spent a huge sum of money to refurbish it to meet the taste of visitors.

Some residents, who spoke to NAN on their expectations when the mundial kicks off on Oct. 24, said they were very anxious to receive hundreds of visitors who would be trooping into the town.

Some of them who are traders, said the event would offer them the opportunity to market their products, particularly food stuffs and drinks.
