Nigeria accounts for 15% global maternal deaths – Pharmacists
The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria-Partnership for Advocacy in Child and Family Health at Scale (PSN-PACFaH@Scale PSN-PAS) Project has said Nigeria accounts for 15 per cent of global maternal deaths.
The society observed that with about 111 women and girls dying every day due to preventable pregnancies and child birth-related complications, over population and high maternal mortality Nigeria stands the risk of being prevented from reaping the dividends of demographic transition.
The Senior Program Officer of the project Edwin Oyoma AKPOTOR who disclosed this during a one-day meeting with relevant stakeholders held in Kaduna, said about 50 per cent of adolescent girls in Nigeria are already mothers by the time they celebrate their 20th birthday
He said by the year 2050 Nigeria is projected to be the 3rd most populous country in the world without proper demographic planning and strategies and may not be able to cope with the economic and social challenges this population explosion would cause.
He recalled that at the July 2017 Family Planning 2020 London Summit, the government of Nigeria committed to achieving 27 per cent modern Contraceptive Prevalence Rate (mCPR) by the year 2020.
