Nigeria is set to adopt Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology as part of a sweeping overhaul of its sports infrastructure aimed at modernising facilities and strengthening the country’s capacity to host international sporting events.
The Federal Government has approved a multi-billion naira development programme covering the comprehensive rehabilitation of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja, alongside a nationwide expansion of sports infrastructure across key regions.
At the heart of the reform is the introduction of VAR technology, a step designed to align Nigeria’s football officiating and match management systems with global standards and improve transparency in the game.
The Abuja National Stadium is set for a full-scale upgrade featuring a new playing surface, improved tartan tracks, modern dressing rooms, upgraded media, VIP and security facilities, and enhanced lighting and display systems.
The redevelopment also includes a high-performance sports centre, an anti-doping laboratory, and the conversion of athlete accommodation into a commercial hospitality complex.
Beyond the capital, the National Sports Commission (NSC) has rolled out a nationwide sports renewal programme featuring the construction of 20 mini-stadiums in communities and 15 sports centres in tertiary institutions across the six geopolitical zones, in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Education.
Chairman of the NSC, Mallam Shehu Dikko, disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of a National Sports Infrastructure Development Bond to ensure sustainable funding and long-term maintenance of the projects.
