A fitness coach, Eguaoje Elakhe, has said that Nigeria is lagging behind despite the global increase in fitness awareness, occasioned by limited access to gyms, poor nutrition, and lack of comprehensive health education.
Elakhe, the founder of Young, Black & Adventurous initiative, in a statement harped on the importance of engaging in regular exercise, saying it prevents sickness and strengthens healthy living.
“Nigeria’s fast urbanization increases these issues, leading to sedentary lifestyles and rising rates of obesity, diabetes, and hypertension. Cultural norms and economic pressures make it tough for people to prioritize fitness,” he said.
He stressed that his focus is to target the unique health challenges faced by young Nigerians, saying he uses social media platforms to provide free workout videos, live fitness sessions, and motivational content to confront these problems.
“We want to empower young people to take control of their health, no matter where they are or their economic status.
“In addition to digital content, YBA Fitness organizes local boot camps, workshops, and health seminars. These efforts are yielding results, with many young participants reporting improvements in physical fitness and mental health.
“Our vision is to create a sustainable fitness ecosystem by partnering with schools, universities, and local businesses,” he said.
He advised on building a fitness culture, saying it will trigger the engagement of people to embrace good health.
