Nigeria’s Under-18 women’s handball team were forced to settle for a thrilling 31-31 draw against a resilient Benin Republic side yesterday in their second group match at the Africa Women’s Youth Handball Championship in Oran, Algeria.

Coach John Uzor’s side made a bright start, showing more sharpness in attack and improved ball circulation compared to their opening-day defeat to Tunisia. Their efforts were rewarded with a 17-15 lead at halftime.

But the Beninoise fought back strongly in the second half, exploiting lapses in Nigeria’s defence and capitalizing on turnovers to stay in contention. Their persistence eventually paid off as they battled back to level the scores, denying Nigeria what could have been their first victory of the tournament.

Although disappointed at letting a halftime advantage slip, the Nigerian team can take positives from a more assured performance than in their opener. They will now aim to build on this fighting display in their upcoming fixtures, which will be crucial in determining their progression in Oran.
