Over 400 Nigeria soldiers today crossed over to Cameroon after they ran out of ammunitions following a fierce fight with suspected Boko Haram insurgents in Gamboru town of Borno State, witnesses said.

It was gathered that the troops had to ‘retreat’ into Cameroon when the number of well armed insurgents that were engaging them kept increasing.

A source said help later came the way of Nigerian troops when Cameroonian soldiers who took them to a safe location later mobilized with the retreating Nigerian soldiers and are currently engaging the attackers at the border that separates the two countries.

A top security source in Maiduguri said, “The fighting is still on in Gamboru but our men are living up to their bid. We would get across to you later.”

Witnesses said the assailants did not touch any civilian or destroyed private buildings in Gamboru but warned residents to remain indoors.

The insurgents also told the residents that they were in Gamboru to take over the town “from the Nigerian government” and establish Sharia system.

A resident of Gamboru, Mukhtar Aliyu Modu told our correspondent by phone it was still dark when the insurgents arrived.

“We were coming out from the mosque after the Subh (dawn prayers) around 5.30am when we started hearing sound of gunshots. Apparently confused, some of us could not run until the insurgents reached the frontage of our mosque. They told us to go home.
