The project was launched at the National Agricultural Show Ground, kilometre 28, Abuja-Keffi Express way, Nasarawa State.
Founder of the group and initiator of Young Farm Project, Barrister Nkiruka Nnaemego said the project is aimed at promoting at least 10,000 youth-led farms and agribusinesses across Africa by 2020.
“Today, the festival provides a unique platform to celebrate, promote youth agric enterprises and constructively engage with relevant stakeholders. Our theme, Youth at the heart of agriculture and Africa’s Development, “was carefully chosen in line with the African year of agriculture and food security declared by the African union,” Nnaemego said.
She stressed that the goal of the project was to promote a youth-led agribusiness society, reduce poverty and increase active youth participation in sustainable agriculture by 2020.
Minister for Agriculture, Dr Akinwumi Adesina said young farm project would key into the government goal of producing agric entrepreneurs who will take over the sector in the future.
He said plans have been concluded to kick-start the agric mechanisation value chain next week.
Represented by a personnel of the ministry, Engineer Abubakar Abdullahi, the minister stressed the need for youth to embrace agriculture.
The event was attended by different youth organisations across the country.
