Retired Court of Appeal Justice Oladotun Adefope-Okojie has warned that Nigeria is “crumbling under political, tribal, and religious divisions” and must unite to move forward.
She spoke in Abuja during the presentation of her book, Civil Litigation: A Quick Reference Guide to Substantive Law and Procedure (4th edition).
“The nation is crumbling under religion and tribal politics. Most Nigerians are unhappy with it.
“If we are not ready to move together as one, maybe we should break up. If not, we must march together,” she said.
Justice Okojie decried the judiciary’s inability to meet citizens’ expectations, saying court backlogs and inefficiency are discouraging investors.
Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, who also spoke at the event, said litigation delays caused by adjournments and interlocutory appeals remain a major challenge.
He warned that technological disruptions, particularly artificial intelligence, will soon impact Nigeria’s legal system, stressing the need for urgent reforms.
Other dignitaries present included former Supreme Court Justice Amina Augie, Emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II, Archbishop Timothy Yahaya, and Olorogun Sonny Folorunso Kuku.
