The Federal Ministry of Environment and the European Union (EU) on Monday reviewed the outcomes of the Nigeria Climate Change Response Programme (NCCRP), which formally concluded with a final seminar in Abuja.

The event, themed “Climate Change Governance: The Importance, Where We Are, and Way Forward,” brought together government officials, technical partners, and civil society representatives to assess the five-year initiative aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s climate governance framework.

Minister of Environment Balarabe Abbas Lawal said the programme had contributed to building institutional capacity for climate action through a new Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) system, development of a climate education curriculum, and improved data on greenhouse gas emissions.

He noted that it also trained journalists and supported waste management assessments in selected states.

While acknowledging implementation challenges, the minister said the experience provided useful lessons for improving future environmental programmes.

The Head of EU delegation to Nigeria, Massimo De Luca, said the NCCRP had supported national efforts to improve emissions tracking and raise public awareness on climate issues. He added that sustaining and scaling up these systems would be important for future progress.

The NCCRP, launched in 2020 with EU funding, sought to strengthen Nigeria’s response to climate change through better coordination, data management, and public engagement.
