Anthony Chukwuma, project director at the council, who revealed this at a research links workshops in Abuja, said the fund was meant for research in soil science with a view to boosting food production in the country.  
Chukwuma alleged that there has been missing link in connecting the nation’s research findings and the real sector of the economy and the British Council has commenced plans to connect researches of both local and international universities to drive a knowledge-based economy.
The British Council, Nigeria, is the United Kingdom’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities.
The project director said the UK has provided 150,000 pounds (N35, 250,000) and the EU three million Euros (N654, 000 000) as research grants respectively to help Nigeria attain her 2015 target on food sufficiency.
Chukwuma said: “We are bringing researchers across the globe to contribute to the growth of global knowledge on economy and agricultural production.”
It would be recalled that the British Council commenced the process of networking local and international universities since 2013 with a view to advancing knowledge based economy.
Akanino Odon of Envirofly consulting Group, who spoke on the missing link between the nation’s universities and the industries, said the gap persists due to lack of effective communication among the parties involved.
