Nigeria inaugurates UNESCO regional centre for integrated river basin management

The centre, which will be hosted by the National Water Resources Institute Kaduna, would coordinate river basin management research and training for West Africa.
The centre, according to Mrs Sarah Reng Ochekpe, would address the critical river basin management problems in the sub-region. “It is important to note that countries in the sub-region have several decades of experience in river basin management with mixed results.”
Ochekpe said there was the need for relevant organisations in the region to come together and address issues relating to climate extremes, food security, water scarcity, water quality, environmental degradation and civil unrest arising from water conflicts which hinders economic growth and sustainable development.
Terms of reference governing the operations of the centre include conducting research and training on all aspects of integrated river basin management, promoting efficient and effective water management strategies within and across river basins at the community, local, state, national, regional and international levels.
