The Chief Executive Officer of Afrinvest Limited, Mr.  Ike Chioke, has said Nigeria is world apart in almost all development indices because of the country’s dependence on oil wealth since the 1970s, which gave rise to the period of fiscal recklessness.

He said the country has since then made series of poor economic choices that lead to the abandonment of thriving agricultural economy and regulations of the dependent Afro based industrial sector.

Chioke noted this while delivering a lecture tagged,  "Character,  Values,  and Leadership: Lesson from my life Journey"  at the American University of Nigeria (AUN) Yola,   9th graduation ceremony at the weekendy.

He pointed out that some Nigerians have destroyed the much cherished societal values such as meritocracy,  integrity and community development, saying. "As a graduate today,  you will all come face to face with the realities of growing up in a society with declining values."

He said the graduating students have been taught hard work,  commitment,  focus and diligence and that, it is all they need to succeed in their chosen field,  "Outside AUN, however, you will face significant new challenges that will impose a strain on your values and character, " he added.

He however,  urged the graduating students to learn to adopt all the knowledge they acquired from the university to solving practical sociology, economic and development problems.

The Interim President of AUN, Professor LeGene Quensenberry in her remark said what  made the class of 2017 unique is the fact that many of them developed new apps and innovation as well as have businesses of their own making them CEOs even as undergraduates.

She noted that AUN taught them to excel and to pursue their dreams,  saying, "Your education has been of great advantage and it’s time you give back to those who do not have."

While congratulating the graduating students,  she urged them to use their education to better the society.

She however,  commended the effort of parents in giving their wards solid and qualitative education, saying, "The class of 2017’s journey in AUN won’t have been possible without their parents.
