Speaking at a media roundtable with journalists in Abuja, the visiting Japanese foreign minister on environment Mr. Hideki Makihara said: “We have observed that waste management system in Africa is not good. We have greatly improved our technology and based on our experience, we are ready to give any assistance of development to Nigeria which is sustainable.”
He said Japan suffered from lots of disease occasioned by their developmental activities and they would not like Nigeria or any African country to witness the experiences of Japan.
He advised Nigeria to explore natural gas power infrastructure, saying that has proved to be an economically friendly source.
He noted that nuclear power is very efficient, lamenting that the world has not been able to agree on the disposal of the waste generated by it, especially its environmental effect.
“We have the tools to assist Nigeria in the area of low carbon technology to reduce green house emission, and we are looking forward to sharing action, technology and experience as well as the future together,” Makihara added.
Makihara is visiting Nigeria after attending a high-level meeting in United Arab Emirates (UAE)  to generate momentum for the 23 September Climate Summit convened by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
The two-day meeting brought together ministers and leaders from business, finance and civil society, to develop proposals for action and determine how their countries, businesses and organisations can increase their participation in order to deliver concrete action at the September Summit.
