The National Senior Citizens Centre (NSCC), in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, celebrated the 2025 International Day of Older Persons and Nigeria’s National Day of Older Persons with a medical outreach in Jos, Plateau State.
The dual event provided hundreds of senior citizens with free healthcare services, including general medical consultations, eye screenings, surgeries, as well as the distribution of essential medicines.
Assistive devices such as walking aids were also provided to improve mobility and independence.
This year’s celebration, themed “Older Persons Driving Local and Global Action: Our Aspirations, Our Well-Being and Our Rights”, is in line with Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises inclusive governance and equitable healthcare access, especially for vulnerable populations.

In her remarks, Hon. Omobolanle Akinyemi-Obe, Director-General of the NSCC, expressed gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to improving the lives of older Nigerians.
She also praised Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, for his continued support in advancing the rights and well-being of senior citizens.
Hon. Akinyemi-Obe further highlighted the Centre’s focus on eye health, referencing the Manila Statement on Universal Eye Health, which calls for urgent global attention to avoidable blindness among ageing populations.
The event not only provided healthcare services but also emphasised the importance of social inclusion and the contributions of older persons to national development.
The event also featured the conferment of the title of Ambassador of Senior Citizens by the National Senior Citizens Centre on Professor Yilwatda, recognising his steadfast dedication to improving the lives of older Nigerians.
