He also said for a nation to build on a successful agriculture, it must not hinge on individual farmers but on a larger scale project. Shamir who spoke to select journalists in Abuja yesterday said the solution for an enhanced agriculture development which Nigeria can emulate from Israel is to build on a social community where resources can be pulled together on a larger scale for production.
The minister who gave a background of the evolution of the Israeli agricultural sector said the country started by establishing research institutes and agricultural schools that formed the basic infrastructure before the cultivation of land. On the Bi-lateral agricultural agreement signed between Israel and Nigeria last week, the minister said it is a detailed document that will focus on six broad areas and trickle to specifics like production of standard agro products, irrigation, fisheries, various research, fertilizers and training.
According to him, it is not only going to be a paper document but a practical implementable policy that would also involve individual businesses from both sides.
Besides, Shamir pointed out that as part of celebration of Nigeria’s centenary Israel want to participate at erasing poverty on the platform of agriculture.
