Manpower development and capacity building for Security Agencies in Nigeria will help curb electoral violence, Commandant-General of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ade Abolurin has said.

He made the submission at the weekend, while delivering a lecture at the faculty of Social and management Sciences, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, on “Prevention and Management of Electoral Violence in Nigeria”.

NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Emmanuel Okeh said in a statement on Saturday that Abolurin maintained that the security apparatus in Nigeria required adequate overhauling “through effective training, proper restructuring and provision of equipment for prompt discharge of their assigned mandate.”

While commending the Nigerian Police for its lead role in crime management, the NSCDC boss however, said more could be achieved through increased synergy between all the security agencies.

He said since election is the only way for Nigerians to enthrone their leaders, it was important to maintain peace, prevent and manage electoral violence during election period.

Abolurin said with adequate training and re-training of security personnel, electoral education, Anti-Corruption Crusade, Good Governance and electoral law reforms, electoral violence will be nipped in the bud.

According to Okeh, the NSDCD Commandant-General said it was important to enlighten the citizens to shun violence and embrace a culture of peace to curtail insecurity and cycle of violence prevalent in our society.
