This will significantly benefit livestock farmers and herdsmen in rural and urban areas in the country.
Global Positioning System (GPS) tracking devices – a wireless technology that pin-points the position of animals, are being adopted by small and large holder farmers in some African countries to detect the positions of their animals.
South African, Botswana and Kenya are already at the fore front of this innovation in Africa.
The methods involved in tracking the animals include the use of bolus technique whereby the cow is made to swallow a tracking device, or through microchip implanted in the animal or an ear-tagging technique.
Once these technologies are used on the cattle, the GPS wireless technology will alert the farmers on the exact positions of their herds whenever they are rustled or gone missing.
A similar Global Positioning System (GPS) mobile-based technology has already been development by the Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations. The application provides information to farmers on animal vaccination schedules, treatments or any outbreak of diseases.
