Nigerians have been counselled on the importance of documenting and preserving their cultural heritage for future generations.

Assistant Director, Arewa House, a subsidiary of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria, Dr. Abubakar Sule Sani made the call at an event on the Re-organisation of Museum Storage project held at Arewa House in Kaduna.

He explained that the project tagged Re-org is sponsored by US-Mission Nigeria under the US-Mission Nigeria  Ambassador Fund for cultural Preservation.

The Assistant Director said Museums are part and reflections of the society hence the need to protect them.

Dr. Sani said, :"Nigeria as a nation needs to preserve its cultural heritage for future generations yet unborn to see so that the history of the country does not die."

Dr. Sani said ABU as beneficiary of the fund are ready to partner with the US and any order organization to achieve the desired goals.

"The Re-org  project is about managing the problematic space in our museum storages. We had too much objects but little space.

"After the technical implementation of re-org we realised we have more space to collect more objects. This is because we removed unwanted objects that were kept in the museum.

"So it is called Re-org which simple means Re-organization of ‎Museum storages and we believe this is one way of salvaging our collections because they are deteriorating in our storages.

"They were kept in the dark but re-org project now exposed this objects. We are given them the values that they deserved. We used to give more attention to exhibition ‎but today we are looking at the Hidden Treasures in our museums," he said.

Dr. Sani said ABU is  training  people that will go out to train others that need their services, in the area of museum management.

In his remarks, Arewa House Curator, Usman Suleiman said Re-org project provides frame work for preservation of cultural heritage.

He added that the public needed to take the documentation of their cultural heritage seriously.
