The number of Nigerians studying in the United States’ tertiary institutions during the 2015-16 academic year is upped by 12.4% to 10,674, the country’s 2016 Open Doors Report on International Educational Exchange has revealed.
This figure makes Nigeria the leading source of African students and ranked 14th worldwide as a source of international students in the United States, the report said.
Nigeria is followed by Ghana with 3,049 students in United States, while Kenya and South Africa are ranked third and fourth with 3,019 and 1,813 students respectively.
The report indicated that Nigerians study primarily at the following levels: 50.8% undergraduate; 35.6% graduate; 11.5% optional practical training; and 2% non-degree programmes or short-term studies.
The Open Doors report also revealed that the number of international students at U.S. colleges and universities surpassed one million for the first time during the 2015-2016 academic year – an increase of seven percent from the previous year to a new high of nearly 1,044,000students.
