Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, has reiterated the country’s commitment to fostering a fairer and more inclusive global system during the BRICS Foreign Ministers Meeting held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Addressing delegates on the topic, “The Role of the Global South in Reinforcing Multilateralism,” Tuggar highlighted Nigeria’s dedication to strengthening multilateralism, particularly from the perspective of the Global South.

Expressing gratitude to Brazil for hosting the meeting and to BRICS for granting Nigeria Partner Country status, Tuggar remarked that the recognition was a testament to the bloc’s pursuit of inclusive multilateralism.

“In a world facing complex challenges from climate change and technological disruption to global economic instability, Nigeria stands with BRICS in calling for reforms that reflect today’s realities and empower the Global South,” he said.

Tuggar emphasised the innovative and collaborative potential of BRICS, citing initiatives such as the New Development Bank and ongoing discussions on a common payment system as pivotal steps toward achieving a balanced global framework.

He further reinforced Nigeria’s alignment with the six priorities identified by Brazil’s 2025 BRICS chairmanship, including contributions to peace and security, sustainable development, health cooperation, and ethical governance of artificial intelligence.

Acknowledging the significance of South-South Cooperation, Tuggar described the Global South as an active contributor to global solutions rather than merely a recipient of policies.

“Nigeria brings a youthful population, a dynamic tech sector, and a strategic geographic position that make it a natural partner in advancing BRICS goals and strengthening intra-African trade under AfCFTA,” he stated.

Tuggar also called for urgent reforms to global governance institutions, particularly the United Nations Security Council, to better reflect contemporary global aspirations and challenges.

“Nigeria is ready to help shape a new era of global cooperation—one grounded in equity, solidarity and mutual respect,” he added.

The meeting reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to actively contribute to multilateralism and create platforms for addressing the pressing challenges of the Global South.
