Nigeria has signed a reviewed Bilateral Air Services Agreement (BASA) with the Kingdom of Morocco, marking a significant step in strengthening air transport relations between both countries.

The agreement was signed by the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, during the ongoing Global Implementation Support Symposium (GISS) in Marrakech.

The revised BASA establishes a modern framework to enhance air connectivity, deepen commercial cooperation, and expand operational opportunities for airlines, airports, and regulatory institutions in both countries, a statement by the Minister’s media aide, Tunde Moshood disclosed.

As part of his engagements at the symposium, the Minister also held high-level meetings with the leadership of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Union, aimed at advancing Nigeria’s aviation sector.

During a courtesy visit to the President of the ICAO Council, Toshiyuki Onuma, Nigeria received commendation for the development of its Civil Aviation Masterplan (CAMP). Onuma also praised Keyamo’s presentation on “The Future of Aviation’s Workforce,” delivered at the symposium.

The ICAO Council President reaffirmed the organisation’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in areas such as workforce development, capacity building, and the implementation of strategic programmes to strengthen the aviation ecosystem.

In response, Keyamo reiterated Nigeria’s alignment with ICAO’s global standards and long-term vision for a safe, secure, and sustainable aviation industry.

 

On the sidelines of the event, the Minister also engaged with the European Union delegation, where both parties explored opportunities to expand technical assistance, strengthen safety oversight, and deepen institutional collaboration.

 

The discussions reaffirmed a shared commitment to advancing Nigeria’s aviation reforms, enhancing regulatory capacity, and modernising the sector in line with global best practices.

 

The newly signed BASA is expected to boost trade, tourism, investment, and people-to-people exchanges between Nigeria and Morocco, while aligning with broader continental aviation priorities and sustainability goals.
