The 2016 edition of the Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held last week in Nigeria’s Garden City, Port Harcourt. Weekend Magazine takes a look at the winners.
All roads led to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital last Saturday when artistes from across Africa and Africans in the Diaspora witnessed the 12th edition of the annual Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA).
In the stiffly contested 26 categories works and artistes from Nigeria, South Africa and the United States topped the pack of winners.
At the event which took place at the Obi Wali International Conference Centre had in attendance the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Rivers State Governor Nyesome Wike and his wife, Eberechi, among other dignitaries, Nigeria received nine awards, while South Africa and the US received four awards each.
“This year, we received close to 485 movie entries from over 60 countries, mostly within Africa and also from around the world out of which we only considered about 65 in different genres for nomination,” said the head of the jury, Mr. Shaibu Husseini.
“This year, we noticed with great pleasure a growing diversity of genres amongst the films we saw. We also observed a visible development in exploring cinematographic styles, especially in the field of storytelling/narration and art direction. We note also a strong presence of women in front of and behind the camera,” he said.
“A couple of the films we have in nomination were either made by women or produced by women. This sure-footed emergence of women filmmakers on the African continent is very promising, encouraging and refreshing for audiences and female professionals in the industry. However, we observed a decline in movies for children and about children,” Husseini added.
He said in the past awards had been handed out to child actors, “but we decided as a jury not to consider that category this year because of inadequate entries.”
Big winners for the night were ‘Cursed ones’ (Ghana) with three awards, ‘Eye of the storm’ (Burkina Faso) also with three awards. ‘Dry’ (Nigeria) received two awards, ‘Tell me something sweet’ (South Africa) received two awards and ‘Soldiers story’ (Nigeria) also went home with two awards.
