The vice chancellor of the University of Kashere, Professor Umaru Pate, has said Nigeria is still struggling with unity despite 64 years of independence.

Pate stated this during a public lecture on ‘Identity, Diversity, and Integration in Nigeria’ to mark Dr Amos Edgar’s retirement as the Head of Service of Adamawa State and his 60th birthday held in Yola.

He pointed out that Nigeria continues to face fundamental challenges in fostering national unity despite its lengthy period as an independent nation.

He expressed concerns about the fabric of national unity being under significant strain, with questions arising about Nigeria’s status as a unified country.

Acknowledging the necessity of managing diversity in such a multicultural environment, Professor Pate said poor governance, corruption, provincial inclinations, and extreme parochialism of the ruling elite in Nigeria have made it difficult to manage the country’s diversity effectively.

However, he noted ongoing efforts by the government and stakeholders to promote national integration and a sense of identity, citing initiatives like the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme.

He emphasized the importance of fostering dialogue, respect, and understanding among different ethnic and religious groups, as well as promoting inclusivity and equality.
