The Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy has opened discussions with the Swiss government on cultural collaboration and the repatriation of Nigerian artifacts currently held in Swiss museums, including monoliths and bronze pieces.

During a courtesy visit to the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musa Musawa Esq., in Abuja, the Swiss Ambassador to Nigeria, H.E. Patrick Felix Egloff, expressed Switzerland’s readiness to deepen cultural diplomacy through bilateral agreements.

“This is the first time a Swiss Ambassador is meeting with a Nigerian Minister of Art and Culture. We are eager to build stronger institutional ties, and the restitution of these artifacts presents a valuable opportunity to do so,” Ambassador Egloff stated.

He noted that the process of returning the artifacts began three years ago and that Switzerland hopes to hand over the bronze pieces through the Nigerian Embassy before the end of the year.

In her response, Minister Musawa thanked the Swiss government for its efforts, stressing the importance of the artifacts’ return to Nigeria’s cultural identity. She described the meeting as a significant milestone in strengthening cultural relations and broadening areas of cooperation.

“It is crucial for Nigeria to reclaim these artifacts, while also engaging in wider conversations with Switzerland on what restitution entails. Beyond this, we look forward to partnerships in fields such as animation, design, architecture, hospitality, and tourism,” the Minister said.

Both parties agreed to sustain dialogue and explore broader opportunities for collaboration in the arts and cultural sectors. The meeting reinforces ongoing diplomatic efforts and reflects the commitment of Nigeria and Switzerland to enhancing cultural ties.
