Nigeria will be a major participant at the proposed sixth Open Government Partnership Global Summit in Ottawa, Canada, from May 29 to 31.

Participants will be drawn from governments, civil society groups, academia, private sector and beyond from 79-member countries who will share knowledge and create solutions for more open and transparent governance around the globe.

In a statement, the Executive Director of Africa Network for Environment and Economic Justice (ANEEJ), Rev. David Ugolor, on Friday, said the organisation would today hold a pre-OGP summit “to create opportunity for stakeholders in Nigeria to review the implementation of the first NAP, discuss critical areas of interest during the summit and explore further avenues for peer learning on how to improve OGP implementation.”

He explained that Nigeria was currently developing a second National Action Plan for the implementation of the OGP strategy after reviewing the implementation of the plan.

“ANEEJ, in collaboration with the MacArthur Foundation, is also organising a session at the OGP Global Summit in Ottawa under the impact theme. The session is titled: “Asset Recovery in OGP: Peer-Learning on Recovery, Return, and Utilisation- Lessons from the Field”, which has been selected as part of the summit’s agenda. The session is currently listed as a Fishbowl,” he said.

“About 30 participants have been invited, including the Canadian High Commissioner to Nigeria,  representatives from the Federal Ministry of Justice, OGP Secretariat, NEITI, members of anti-corruption working group, World Bank, DFID and other development partners and CSOs, including journalists,” he said.

Nigeria joined the OGP in 2016 after President Muhammadu Buhari committed to the partnership during the London Anti-Corruption Summit. A National Action Plan was shortly developed with 14 commitments covering four thematic areas: Fiscal Transparency, Anti-Corruption, Access to Information and Citizen Engagement.
