The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has projected a 25 per cent annual growth rate in cargo volumes in five years to emerge as the number one country in Africa in cargo handling and facilitation.

Nigeria is in the fifth position in Africa, having facilitated 204,649 tons of cargo in 2021. However, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Nairobi facilitated 363,204 tons leads in cargo throughput.

The managing director of FAAN, Capt. Rabiu Yadudu, at the inauguration of Aviation Cargo Roadmap Development Committee in Lagos, charged the members to drive the “development of an implementable aviation cargo road map that will address the identified challenges.”

He said, “It is our belief that your road map guideline will be able to address the ways by which our aviation cargo processing and facilitation will increase in volumes to rank us among the first or at least the second in Africa before or by the year 2027.”

The FAAN MD reiterated that most administrative bottlenecks identified by the various organizations are being considered at the ministerial level.

“I can assure you that administrative challenges already identified will be rectified for more efficiency in our operations and logistics,” he added.

The committee is headed by Mr Ikechi Uko, the organiser of the Chinet Aviation Cargo conference.

The conference had recommended that a committee should be formed to address the bottlenecks being faced by exporters and those in the cargo business value chain.
