Nigeria to increase milk production by 2000 litres per day

This would be achieved by upgrading the milk production level of the indigenous cows through artificial insemination with high productivity semen and feed supplement.
The director, Federal Department of Animal Production and Husbandry Services, stated this during the capacity building for Dairy Value Chain Subject Matter Specialists (SMSs) in 11 states in Nigeria at Ramat Hotels, New Nyanya, Nasarawa State.
Represented by Alhaji Adeola, a deputy director in the department, he maintained that the training seeks to equip the officers of the 11 states and the value chain team with the techniques of artificial insemination and assessment at farm level, Bovine reproduction and health in dairy animals and techniques for assessment of animal health and production parameters.
The Desk Officer of Dairy Value Chain, Mr. Ezenwa Nwakonobi, while giving the overview of the dairy value chain, said the objectives include creation of structural shift in the dairy industry in Nigeria.
Nwakonobi said the value chain, which includes linking private sector processors to domestic milk supplies, increased national milk output from 469,000MT to 1.1 million MT by organising small holder milk producer’s cooperatives clustered around milk processors.
He said the 2014 GES roll-out for dairy value chain begins by 24 November, 2014 in all the 11 states for 2,200 farmers.  4,400 animals were targeted; 300kg of feed and 10kg of salt lick will be redeemed per farmer for N11, 200 at 50% subsidy.
