A coalition of American-based advocacy organisations has called on the Nigerian government to continue strengthening efforts aimed at promoting religious tolerance and ensuring the safety of all communities across the country.

The appeal was made in Abuja by Dr. Sylvester Onyia, speaking on behalf of the Coalition of American Veterans of Igbo Descent (AVID), in collaboration with Ambassadors for Self-Determination and Rising Sun.

Dr. Onyia said the group welcomed recent discussions between Nigerian and U.S. officials on human rights and interfaith harmony, noting that constructive international engagement could support Nigeria’s ongoing peacebuilding and security initiatives.

He emphasised the importance of sustained collaboration between the Nigerian government, civil-society organisations, and faith-based groups to promote dialogue and prevent violence in communities affected by insecurity.

“We acknowledge Nigeria’s sovereignty and commend ongoing government efforts to protect all citizens, regardless of faith or ethnicity,” Onyia said. “Our call is for continued partnership and transparent dialogue that strengthens peace and mutual respect.”

The coalition noted that international partners have shown interest in supporting Nigeria’s human-rights and humanitarian programmes, particularly in areas recovering from conflict. It encouraged continued cooperation with global and regional institutions to consolidate these gains.

The Nigerian government has repeatedly reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms of all citizens. Officials have also highlighted ongoing military and security operations aimed at restoring peace in areas affected by criminality and insurgency.

In its statement, AVID urged stakeholders to keep working together to promote reconciliation, justice, and sustainable peace.

“Lasting stability will come through shared commitment to justice, understanding, and reconciliation,” the group said.

The coalition also encouraged dialogue on broader national issues, including the rule of law and human rights, while commending Nigeria’s commitment to constitutional governance.

“Nigeria’s global standing will continue to grow as it strengthens institutions and fosters mutual trust among its diverse communities,” the statement added.

AVID reaffirmed its respect for Nigeria’s sovereignty and expressed confidence that ongoing reforms and partnerships will help promote peace and religious coexistence across the country.
