Nigeria have made a splash on the first full day of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth games with a record-breaking performance by Esther Nworgu in the women’s para-weightlifting event on Friday.
Nworgu won the gold medal of the women’s Lightweight para-weightlifting event with a record 119 points to claim gold medal.
She becomes the first female to win a medal at the 2026 games. She also finished ahead of her compatriot Esther Oyema, and England’s Olivia Broome took bronze.
The 23-year-old won the gold medal by breaking the competition’s weight record twice.

She posted a record 114.1 points from a 118kg lift to smash Zoe Newson of England’s 102.2 points record.
She then improved on the record on her second lift, powering 123kg to smash the Commonwealth record a second time.
The Paris 2024 Paralympic Games silver medalist becomes the first gold medalist for Nigeria in Glasgow, and on her first Commonwealth games participation.
Earlier, 50-year-old Roland Ezuruike won Nigeria’s first medal at the Games, claiming silver in the men’s lightweight para-powerlifting event.
The veteran lifted 187kg on his second attempt and was tied for the gold medal with England’s Mike Swan, but failed to make his last attempt to settle for silver.
Nigeria currently leads the Commonwealth medals table with three medals, and is participating in 10 sporting events at the Games holding from July 23 to August 2.
