The track event athletes from Nigeria made a clean sweep of all the medals on offer in their events, winning all the gold medals in all the track events in the process.

The Nigerian youths failed to pick gold medal only in two field events: high jump boys and triple jump boys.

AFN President, Solomon Ogba, expressed happiness at the dominance of the Nigerian youth athletes, who also qualified for the maiden edition of the Youth Olympics, which will hold in Singapore later in the year.

Ogba attributed the success of the athletes to the ceaseless efforts of his federation, which aims at repositioning athletes in Nigeria so that the country can regain her position among the great athletic countries of the World.

“When you train for a reason and you train very hard, you will get the result. That is what has happened here in Senegal.

“I think the secret of our impressive performance could be attributed to our decision to pick the athletes for this championship by using the IAAF World Junior standard instead of the IAAF World Youth standard. This gave our athletes an edge over their counterparts,” Ogba said.

Ogba promised that serious preparations for the Youth Olympics will commence in good time to enable the athletes build on the success they recorded in the Olympics trial.
