Nigeria@60: Why Nigerians should celebrate – CAN President

Dr. Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, CAN President

The President of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Rev Samson Olasupo Ayokunle, has condemned those saying Nigerians had no reason to celebrate the country’s 60th independence anniversary, insisting the nation has reasons to celebrate.

Speaking after a leadership conference at the New Estate Baptist Church in Abuja, Rev Ayokunle – who is also President of Nigerian Baptist Convention – said being alive alone was enough reason to be grateful to God in view of the coronavirus disease that is currently ravaging the world.

He said: “If there is nothing in the past to celebrate, we need to celebrate the fact that the pandemic [coronavirus] did not wipe us out.

“The World Health Organisation predicted that this pandemic will kill 30 million in Nigeria alone but God surprised them. But beyond that, we have development because we are not where we were.”

Rev Ayokunle said the leadership program was to equip Christians to become impactful leaders in the society.
