The Nigerian Army has commenced a 30-day public awareness campaign against religious extremism in the North East. The sensitization campaign is designed to counter extremist ideologies in the society. It will largely focus on clerics and enlist their aid in debunking the false teachings that form the ideological pillars of the insurgency. It will also promote the ideals of love, tolerance, peace and unity as the fulcrums for the restoration of social cohesion in the region. This effort will complement the Nigerian Army’s already operational deradicalization programme which facilitates the rehabilitation of surrendered insurgents and their reintegration into the society.
