Nigerian clubs handed tricky opponents in CAF competitions

Nigeria’s Enyimba, Remo Stars, Rivers United and Bendel Insurance have been handed difficult First Round preliminary opponents in the 2023/2023 CAF inter-clubs competitions.

At the draws held yesterday in Cairo, reigning NPFL Champions Enyimba were handed Ahly Benghazi in the first preliminary round of the CAF Champions League.

If they scale through after two legs, Enyimba will then play the winner in the other fixture between AS Coton Sport of Cameroon and Asec Mimosa of Ivory Coast for a place in the group stage.

Nigeria’s second Champions League representatives, Remo Stars were drawn against Medeama of Ghana who are holders of the Ghanaian Premier League title.

If they emerge victorious, they will meet Horoya FC of Guinea for a chance in the group stage.

In the second tier competition, Bendel Insurance who are returning to continental football after so many years were pitched against North African giants, ASO Chief of Algeria, while Rivers United whose quarter-final finish last season earned them an exemption from the first round of qualifiers face the winner of the match between Etiole Flante of Burkina Faso and Senegal’s Ziguinchor.

The first legs of the matches will be held between August 18 and 20, while the second legs are scheduled to take place after two weeks.
