A Nigerian drilling engineer, Obinna Joshua Ochulor, has been recognized for his role in advancing offshore oil and gas operations across Africa and other regions through a combination of precision drilling, operational discipline, and adherence to global safety standards.
Ochulor, who has supervised drilling and completions operations across several offshore projects, has worked on exploration and appraisal wells using the Selective Marine Oritsetimeyin jack-up rig offshore Nigeria. Among the notable projects under his supervision was the Olobia-2 exploratory and development well, where he oversaw drilling and completion activities in compliance with safety and performance objectives.
His professional experience also includes contributions to the Egina Field in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 130, one of Africa’s largest deepwater developments operated by TotalEnergies E&P Nigeria. According to project records, Ochulor participated in drilling campaigns involving more than two dozen subsea wells, including the Preowei exploratory and Akpo infill wells, focusing on well delivery optimization and managed pressure drilling (MPD) systems integration.
Beyond Nigeria, Ochulor has participated in offshore projects in Côte d’Ivoire, Egypt, and Spain. His work in the Baobab Field offshore Côte d’Ivoire, operated by Canadian Natural Resources Limited (CNRL), involved deepwater drilling operations designed to support production expansion and subsea systems reliability.
He also contributed to MPD operations in the West Delta Deep Marine (WDDM) Burullus Field offshore Alexandria, Egypt, under the RASHPETCO/Shell-EGPC Joint Venture, applying real-time drilling control systems to improve pressure management and minimize operational risks.
In Europe, Ochulor was involved in the Drillship SPS Project in the Canary Islands, where he supervised maintenance and system upgrades to improve rig performance in high-pressure and high-temperature drilling environments. He also participated in the Discoverer India Drillship (DID) Out-of-Service and MPD Installation Project in Las Palmas, focusing on system integration and safety assurance during rig modifications.
Throughout his career, Ochulor has emphasized operational safety, environmental protection, and efficiency as key elements of offshore project management. His roles have included planning well programs, coordinating multidisciplinary teams, and overseeing compliance with corporate and regulatory standards.
Colleagues familiar with his work describe him as part of a growing generation of African offshore professionals contributing to global deepwater operations. Industry observers note that such expertise reflects the increasing role of African engineers in complex energy projects requiring both technical and environmental sensitivity.
Ochulor’s experience across multiple offshore basins, from West Africa to the Mediterranean, underscores Africa’s growing capacity to participate in high-technology segments of the global energy sector, particularly in deepwater exploration and managed pressure drilling.
