Akwaeke Emezi was commended for her work ‘Welcome’ under the fiction category of the 2015 Wasafiri New Writing Prize.
Emezi and Koye Oyedeji, another Nigerian, were among those earlier short-listed for the prize but lost to Uschi Gatward who wrote ‘My Brother is Back.’ The prize for the poetry category also went to Amaal Said for ‘The Girl Grew’ and Louise Kennedy for ‘A Suitable Family,’ life writing.
The three winning entries will be published in Wasafiri’s Spring 2016 issue and the shortlisted works will be available to read on the Wasafiri website throughout 2016.
