A non-governmental organization, Concerned Citizens Forum, Nigeria decried the rising scourge of Nigerian girls being trafficked to Burkina Faso for prostitution through syndicates of unnamed ‘madams.’

 

It alleged that the syndicates lure unsuspecting girls with business engagement.

 

The Forum’s Coordinator and the National President Cashew Association of Nigeria, Ojo Ajanaku stated this while briefing the press yesterday in Abuja.

 

He disclosed that the Nigerian embassy in Ouagadougou is equally concerned about the scourge and has collaborated with its host authorities who arrested some of the ‘madams’ responsible for trafficking the girls, whereas 63 girls have been retrieved.

 

“The embassy is contemplating deporting these Nigerian citizens by road back home to Nigeria, which I feel will not be appropriate because many of these sex workers and ‘madams’ may escape before getting back to Nigeria.

 

“These people, I mean the madams should be made to account for their wrongdoings, and the girls that are being dehumanised need reorientation as we know many of them may have found solace in what they’re being used for.

“I am pleading with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to please as a matter of urgency intervene in this matter to evacuate them home,’’ he said.

 

He further emphasised that the Nigerian cashew sector can help in employing some of these girls adding that, “If we set up cashew nursery farms in the 89 senatorial districts where the crop can be grown, we’ll be employing over 1,335 Nigerians. And by extension, if we are able to distribute cashew seedlings to Nigerians to farm we will be creating additional jobs for cashew farmers thereby increasing cashew production in Nigeria,’’ he added.
