According to Usikaye, the performance of the judokas in the recently concluded 31st African Judo Championship, which took place in Yaounde, Cameroun, gives the federation much hope that the athletes will not disappoint Nigeria.
The Judo World Cup, which will serve as Olympics Games qualifier, will hold in Cairo, Egypt between May 15 and May 19.
“With the impressive performance recorded by our Judokas in Cameroun, where the team returned from the 31st edition of the African Judo championship in Yaounde with three bronze medals, the chances of doing better in Egypt are very high,” he assured.
In Yaounde, Franka Audu won a bronze medal in the 4 kg, Adijat Ayuba won another medal of the same colour in the +78kg category and Eniafe Alabi won the third bronze medal in +60kg category.
Usikaye expressed confidence in the Cairo-bound team’s ability to win some Olympics slots for Nigeria, pledging to do everything possible to ensure that Nigeria does not only participate in the sport, but excel.
