President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has marked the 68th anniversary of the Nigerian Navy by commissioning three ships and two helicopters aimed at bolstering its capability in protecting the nation’s blue economy.

The commissioning ceremony, held at the Naval Dockyard in Victoria Island, Lagos, was part of a series of events commemorating the milestone.

Represented by Vice President, Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu highlighted the Nigerian Navy’s commitment to addressing evolving security challenges in the maritime domain.

Speaking at the 5th International Maritime Conference, he stressed the importance of international cooperation in combating maritime crimes and promoting economic growth.

The theme of the conference, “Promoting the Blue Economy in Africa through International Cooperation on Maritime Security,” resonated with global objectives, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 14 and Africa’s Agenda 2063.

Tinubu underscored the significant economic potential of the blue economy, emphasising the need for collaborative initiatives to harness its benefits.

Dr Bello Matawalle, Minister of State for Defence, commended the Nigerian Navy for its professionalism and dedication to safeguarding the nation’s maritime interests.

He expressed optimism that the conference would generate innovative strategies to enhance maritime security and foster economic prosperity.

In his address, the CNS, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla, emphasised the transnational nature of maritime threats and the need for international collaboration to address them effectively.

He highlighted regional and continental initiatives aimed at achieving sustainable maritime security architecture in Africa.
