Nigerian Scientist leads global STEM drive to empower youth through education, sports

A Nigerian-born American scientist, Engr. Iheanyichukwu Chukwugozie Ajoku, has called for increased investment in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education in Nigeria, describing it as the foundation for industrial growth, national prosperity, and technological independence.
Ajoku, a doctoral researcher in Materials Science and Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology (Missouri S&T), United States, is also the STEM Student Ambassador for the Ceramic and Glass Industry Foundation (CGIF), an affiliate of the American Ceramic Society.
In this role, he has championed several international STEM outreach initiatives across Nigeria and the U.S., aimed at inspiring young learners to explore careers in materials science, ceramics, and glass technology.
Speaking about his motivation, Ajoku said that no nation could thrive in the modern world without a strong STEM foundation. “STEM is the engine of industrial development and national competitiveness.
“For Nigeria, deliberate investment in STEM education and outreach can transform its economy and strengthen its educational system”, he said.
He explained that STEM outreach goes beyond classroom teaching, as it bridges the gap between theory and real-world application.
“Outreach programs introduce young learners to discovery, experimentation, and innovation,” Ajoku said, adding that Nigeria’s lack of functional laboratories and hands-on learning has weakened students’ connection to science.
In collaboration with the CGIF, Ajoku led a major STEM outreach programme at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) between 2024 and 2025. Through the CGIF Kit Grant Programme, he facilitated the donation of two Materials Science Classroom Kits and two Glass Science Kits to UNILAG’s Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering.
The initiative exposed over 150 students and teachers from UNILAG and nearby secondary schools to practical demonstrations on shape memory alloys, piezoelectric materials, glass formation, and thermal shock resistance.
Beyond the classroom, Ajoku has also sought to merge science with sports. Drawing on his background as a former professional footballer and long-time admirer of Enugu Rangers International Football Club, he launched an initiative that introduces young athletes to the science behind sports equipment and materials.
The programme teaches players under 17 the principles of materials science as it relates to athletic performance, including football pitch construction and gear design.
According to Ajoku, this approach bridges two powerful youth development tools, science and sports. “By helping athletes understand the science behind their performance, we can inspire a generation that values both intellectual and physical excellence,” he said.
He stressed that countries like Singapore, Germany, and South Korea have shown that investment in STEM leads directly to technological advancement and economic growth. For Nigeria, he said, STEM education could spur local manufacturing, promote innovation, and reduce reliance on foreign technologies.
Ajoku urged the government, universities, industries, and private organisations to collaborate in promoting STEM outreach through well-equipped laboratories, teacher training, mentorship programmes, and nationwide STEM clubs.
“The greatest resource Nigeria has is not oil, but the creativity and intelligence of its youth. Investing in STEM is not just an educational decision, it is an economic necessity”, he said.
Ajoku emphasized that Nigeria’s technological future depends on nurturing curiosity and innovation among students.
“The seeds of development lie in classrooms and laboratories. Through consistent STEM commitment, Nigeria can rise as a continental leader in science and technology,” he added.
