NIS also demanded for good map of the country to enable Nigerians to know where towns and villages belonging to Nigeria’s territory start and end so as to know who to take care of and where, whenever there are challenges.
President of NIS, Barrister Bern Omo Akhigbe made the call last week shortly after the elevation of 34 members to the status of fellowship of the body during the 2015 fellows’ investiture in Lagos.
In an interview with Daily Trust, Akhigbe explained that NIS had engaged some of the presidential candidates on the need to create a mapping and surveying agencies for ease of work of surveyors in the country.
According to him, “At present, the country does not have good map that can tell whoever cares to know where a particular town or village is located in Nigeria. There is no way we can check electoral fraud without having a proper map that can give details. “We can help the country to curb all forms of electoral malpractices. Surveyors owe a lot to Nigerians. They can’t do anything without surveyors because all plans, economic, social or whatever are to be done on land.”
Contributing, the immediate past president of NIS, Dr. Olusola Atilola explained, “We’ve been saying it for long that there is need to provide money for funding mapping of the country because we need it for many reasons.”
