Ozumba was awarded the prize for his short story, The One Armed Thief; it was adjudged the best submission from Africa. He previously won the 2006 Decibel Penguin Prize for short story. There were three other regional prize winners for the Caribbean, the Pacific and Asia.

Two other Nigerians, Ayobemi Adebayo and Akinwumi Akinwale, also had their short stories Dreams and Lifo respectively selected among the highly recommended 26 submissions.

The biggest prize, however, went to UK’s Jennifer Moore for her short story Table Talk. She goes home with the prize money of 2000 pounds.

The winning stories were selected from over 4,000 entries from almost all countries of the Commonwealth. The choice of stories was made on the basis of merit, originality and voice by an international panel of judges, the organizers said.
