President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Ayuba Wabba, has denounced the economic blockade imposed by the United States against Venezuela, saying the financial sanctions are “not accepted by Nigerian workers.” 

President Donald Trump, last year, signed an executive order barring US firms and individuals from any new financial deal with the government of Nicolás Maduro or state-run oil giant, PDVSA. 

Wabba who dismissed the US move during a solidarity meeting with Venezuela’s Foreign Minister, Jorge Arreaza, in Abuja, said the Bolivarian nation must be allowed to manage its resources for the benefit of its people.  

“There is a new trend of neo-liberalism where interests of countries are being undermined. This, certainly, is unacceptable. There must be freedom and freedom must be total without limitation or restriction,” he said. 

He, therefore, assured the country of NLC’s continuous support and solidarity, stressing that “Nigerian workers are in support of justice and fairness and we are against the blockade because it is not justified.” 

Speaking earlier, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister said the US economic blockade had affected critical social services like health and education. 

“Banks closed our accounts and when we seek support from international financial institutions, they deny us because they have orders from the US not to help us,” the minister said. 

He said despite the sanctions, the government had not stopped providing basic social services to the people.
